Recognition
The dorsal bundles with bifid or simple chaetae but no hairs. Only mature worms can be identified. The penis sheaths are 0.3 to 0.6 or even 1.0 mm (up to 14 x the width) in length and several forms exist.
Summary
A medium sized tubificid (20 - 35 mm) that is the most common and widespread species in the family. Occurs in clean water and grossly polluted sites.
Distribution
A world-wide species that is widespread in North America.
